Trading in the Netherlands requires every party to work with a Balance Responsible Party (BRP). PVNED handles that in full: registration and day-to-day management of your position with TenneT, while you still have full control over your own trading strategy. PVNED holds no positions of it’s own & has one point of contact for market access, forecasting and settlement.

Why the Dutch market sits closer to home than you’d expect

Denmark already shares the same synchronous grid as the Netherlands and Germany through DK1, and Energinet monitors that grid’s balance partly via the Danish-Dutch border. Through the COBRAcable, operational since 2019 between Eemshaven and Endrup, direct market coupling with the Netherlands already exists. That makes trading on the Dutch energy maret from Denmark a matter of connecting.

As a transit market between Scandinavian hydropower and continental Europe’s thermal and renewable generation, you already know the price dynamic from both sides. What’s still missing to put that connection to use is the BRP that registers, manages and accounts for your position on the Dutch market on your behalf. That’s the role PVNED fulfils.

Balance Responsible Party: why Energinet doesn’t do this for you

On Nord Pool, balancing is part of the exchange relationship itself. That is true for both DK1 and DK2, despite sitting in different synchronous zones. In the Netherlands it works differently. Every party that injects or withdraws energy must be connected to a recognised BRP that carries the imbalance risk and handles administration towards TenneT.

Access to EPEX SPOT or Nord Pool NL doesn’t take care of that for you. PVNED fulfils the Balance Responsible Party role in full and holds no trading positions of its own; without conflict of interest with your business.

What PVNED does for you

We work on four areas that make sure your position as a Danish company on the Dutch energy market runs smoothly:

  • Market access – putting your COBRAcable connection to work with TenneT: We register your portfolio with TenneT and make your position on the Dutch energy market operational. From Denmark, PVNED connects you to EPEX SPOT, Nord Pool NL and Etpa, covering bot your day-ahead and intraday trading.
  • Open position and balance responsibility – the risk we take over: We take over balance responsibility for your Dutch open position in full, separate from your obligations to Energinet in Denmark. That fits how the two grids are already connected: Energinet monitors the balance of DK1 partly via the Danish-Dutch border.
  • Forecasting and nominations – staying in control when nature turns: Our forecasting translates market movements into daily nominations for your Dutch position, even when those movements come from two directions. As a transit market between Scandinavian hydropower and continental generation, you’re already used to that dynamic.
  • Settlement and reporting – figures that add up every month: We reconcile your imbalance outcomes with TenneT and take the administrative settlement off your plate, so every month you get a clear, dependable read on how your portfolio is performing.

The automatic advantage of pooling

PVNED pools the daily per-quarter-hour volume of all its clients into one combined position. Some quarter-hours settle at two different imbalance prices, and when that happens, the scale of that shared volume creates an advantage, part of which we pass straight back to you. It’s a source of return that’s hard to reach on your own, but one you benefit from automatically once PVNED manages your Dutch position.

Note: These are not guarantees. They are structural features of the Dutch imbalance market and pool participation is how you get exposure to them.

Who we work with

  • Trade Only companies: Trade Only firms that are already active on COBRAcable, Kontek or Vking Link who want to add the Dutch energy market. This applies whether you’re not yet active on the Dutch energy market or already hold a position and are looking to switch to a different BRP.
  • Energy producers and trading companies: For energy producers we provide accurate forecasting and settlement of your Dutch volume. For industrial bulk consumers we secure predictable imbalance costs alongside your Danish procurement.

Why work with us: the time between registration and return

A Trade Only position is about speed: the sooner you’re trading, the sooner that position pays off. Building your own BRP registration works against that speed. TenneT certification, forecasting and nomination systems, and ongoing compliance and reporting take six to twelve months to set up, months in which nothing is earned yet.

Through PVNED, you skip that build-up phase. TenneT access, EPEX trading access and the imbalance pool are ready for you from day one. PVNED acts solely as your BRP, so the trading strategy and the choices within it remain entirely yours.

Discussing a position on the Dutch market

Every situation is different: some Danish companies are trading the Dutch imbalance market for the first time, others already work with a BRP and are considering a switch. Tell us where you stand in a short conversation, and we’ll think through the next step with you.

Get in touch with PVNED or call +31 (0)85 040 3210 to discuss balance responsibility for your Dutch position, including access to our imbalance pool and, where relevant, switching over from another BRP.

Frequently asked questions by Danish companies

Why does the Netherlands allow an open positon, when most markets don’t?

In most European balancing markets, including Energinet’s, a position has to be closed ahead of every delivery. TenneT works differently: a position can be deliberately left open and traded on the imbalance market itself. PVNED manages that position for you, as a standard part of the BRP service.

Does it matter whether I trade from DK1 or DK2 for my access to the Dutch market?

No. Both bidding zones give access to the same exchanges, Nord Pool and EPEX SPOT. The distinction between DK1 and DK2 lies in the synchronous coupling of your home market, not in what TenneT requires from you. PVNED handles a position from either zone in exactly the same way.

Why do I need a BRP if I already trade on EPEX or Nord Pool?

Access to EPEX SPOT or Nord Pool determines who may trade. Who stands behind the balance of that trading is a separate question, at Energinet just as much as at TenneT. On the Dutch market, PVNED fills that second role; our Balance Responsible Party page explains exactly how that works.

How does value come from PVNED’s imbalance pool?

Our imbalance pool bundles daily volume from all clients. In the quarter-hours where that pooled volume lands on the more favourable side of the price, a difference arises that we partly pass back. For a Danish portfolio already used to price movements from two directions, via Scandinavian hydropower and continental generation, that’s a familiar kind of dynamic. The full mechanics are on our imbalance pooling page.

Can I switch to PVNED if I’m already with another BRP?

Yes. PVNED takes care of the full transfer of your E-programmes and nominations, so the switch doesn’t cost you a moment of trading activity. Even when your Danish and Dutch positions run through different couplings, that transfer remains a single process.
