Every party trading in the Netherlands needs a balance responsible party. This applies whether you are entering the market for the first time or already manage a position with another BRP. PVNED registers and manages your position with TenneT and takes the accountability for it off your hands, so you can focus on trading.

Wat de Nederlandse markt toevoegt aan uw portfolio

Your Norwegian positions move with reservoir levels, rainfall, and the spread between the bidding zones. The Dutch imbalance market is driven by wind and gas, a pricing logic that is unrelated to Norwegian hydrology. For a portfolio already exposed to Scandinavian hydropower, this addition spreads risk.

Norway is already directly connected to the Dutch grid via the NorNed cable. The market coupling already exists. PVNED is the BRP that registers, manages, and accounts for your position with TenneT.

Balance responsible party: the role that doesn’t exist on Nord Pool

On Nord Pool, balancing is part of your relationship with the exchange itself. No extra steps are needed there. Through PVNED, a recognised BRP carries the imbalance risk for your portfolio. We submit the E-programmes to TenneT, manage the nominations, and settle the quarter-hourly deviations, including those from your open position.

Access to EPEX SPOT or Nord Pool NL does not replace that BRP coverage. These are two separate requirements. PVNED fulfils the BRP role in full and takes no trading positions of its own. As a result, there is no conflict of interest between your position and PVNED’s.

What PVNED does for you

Four factors ensure that your position in the Dutch market as a Norwegian company is going well:

  • Market access directly from NorNed to TenneT: Your portfolio is registered with TenneT and your position is set up, via the same cable that has directly connected Norway to the Dutch grid since 2008. Access to EPEX SPOT, Nord Pool NL, and Etpa is available from day one, for day-ahead and intraday.
  • Open position and balance responsibility: Your Norwegian positions move with reservoir levels and rainfall across five bidding zones. We manage your Dutch open position as a separate price source, driven by wind and gas, which spreads risk rather than doubling it.
  • Forecasting and nominations: Our forecasting is built around a pricing logic unrelated to Norwegian hydrology, so you build two independent risk sources rather than doubling the same one.
  • Settlement and reporting: We report monthly on your Dutch portfolio, including an overview of the realised imbalance outcomes and the settlement with TenneT.

Additional return via the imbalance pool

PVNED combines the volume of all clients daily, per quarter of an hour, into a single position. Whenever a quarter of an hour has two imbalance prices, which happens regularly, part of the surplus comes back to you. You also occasionally benefit from the spread between the purchased EPEX price and the final imbalance price.

Please note: These are not guarantees. They are structural characteristics of the Dutch imbalance market, and participating in the pool is the way to gain exposure to them.

Who is PVNED for?

  • Trading companies: Trade Only companies already have access to the northwest European grid via NorNed, NordLink, or North Sea Link. Those trading on EPEX SPOT or Nord Pool add the Dutch imbalance market with PVNED as a separate, independent price source alongside their existing portfolio.
  • Energy producers: Energy companies want to be sure that their Dutch volume is correctly forecast, nominated and settled.
  • Industrial bulk consumers: Where consumption patterns fluctuate, professional programme management keeps imbalance costs predictable.

Direct access to existing BRP infrastructure

Building your own BRP registration takes six to twelve months: TenneT certification, forecasting and nomination systems, and ongoing compliance. For a Trade Only company, that is overhead for a position that is meant to generate returns.

Through PVNED, you get direct access to TenneT infrastructure, EPEX trading access, and the imbalance pool. We take no trading positions ourselves, so there is no conflict of interest with your own book. You remain responsible for your own trading strategy. PVNED handles the forecasting, nominations, and settlement around it.

Take the step from Norway into the Dutch energy market

Are you evaluating the Dutch market as an addition to your Norwegian portfolio, or do you already hold a position with another BRP? Either way, we’ll discuss in an introductory call what fits your trading strategy.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between the imbalance market in the Netherlands and on Nord Pool?

On Nord Pool, every position is closed out against day-ahead or intraday. In the Netherlands, you can hold a position open and trade it on the imbalance market itself. PVNED manages that Dutch position on your behalf.

Norway isn’t an EU member. Does that affect access to the Dutch market?

No. As an EEA country, Norway is fully integrated into the European day-ahead and intraday coupling, via SDAC and SIDC. BRP access through PVNED works the same as for a party from an EU country.

I already trade on Nord Pool. Why do I also need a BRP in the Netherlands?

Trading access on Nord Pool doesn’t give you coverage in the Netherlands. Any party feeding in or drawing energy from the Dutch grid must be affiliated with a recognised BRP that carries the imbalance risk. PVNED fulfils that role, separate from your trading account with Nord Pool or EPEX SPOT.

What does the imbalance pool add for me, beyond the BRP obligation?

PVNED combines the volume of all clients daily, per quarter-hour. When a quarter-hour has two imbalance prices, a surplus arises that is partly returned to clients. The difference between the purchased EPEX price and the final imbalance price can also work in your favour.

I already have a position with another BRP. Can I switch to PVNED?

Yes. PVNED takes over the transfer of your E-programmes and nominations. The switch happens in phases, so your Dutch position stays uninterrupted.
